Gallery Notes - Eskdale

Eskdale; the Great MossThere is much to enthuse about Eskdale, and therefore much to savour: should we shout loudly from the rooftops about England's finest mountain glen, Scottish in proportions and wild in essence? With similar sentiment to that expressed for the Rhinog, I share in open spirit in the hope that it shall remain a special place, quiet, huge and bracing.

Eskdale begins near the Cumbrian coast and runs east to the wall of the Hardknott pass in the south-west of the Lake District National Park. Quiet, with its steam railway and delightful hostelry, Eskdale has an attraction for the everyday traveller.

Eskdale: the Great MossBut it is to the north, three hours from the road in the upper glen and the Great Moss, where one finds true mountain grandeur, the finest in England and without peer. From Scafell and Scafell Pike clockwise over Esk Hause to Esk Pike, Bowfell and Crinkle Crags, England's highest peaks encircle and engage the walker. There is no finer place to linger for more than your day's walk. You can find everything in this in this magnificent glen: sweeping vistas, great crags, delicate falls and deep gorges. And so you can escape everything too.
