Gallery Notes - Canary Islands: Fuerteventura

Dune StepsPeople said "Don't bother with Fuerteventura, there's nothing there. It's so barren, dry and dull". So we ignored them.

When a place is billed as the oldest and emptiest of the Canary Islands, and being the second largest we reckoned that empty meant empty, that seemed like a great reason to go there and explore.

We were not disappointed.

Couple strolling on the wild beach at La ParedFuerteventura is indeed empty, with miles of expansive sands where naturism is universally tolerated; casting away clothing and cares is therapy of the highest order. We explored magnificent dunes near Corralejo, wild beaches on the Atlantic west coast near El Cotillo and La Pared, idyllic leeward stretches of sand such as Playa Sotavento, barren inland hills and a high sand isthmus, El Jable.

Like anywhere else, there is more to be done, especially the mountainous peninsula of Jandia and the wildest beaches of all, Playa Barlovento. But the collection as it stands is, I feel, worthy.
