Gallery Notes - Scoat Reflections

Cloud reflection in Scoat Tarn, with SeatallanAlthough my photographic philosophy often makes reference to the unimportance of 'place', just occasionally a place provides the perfect fusion of circumstances for wonderful light, and so becomes the location of opportunity. This series was made over a number of visits, of which there will be many more, and is similar in idea to the Rhinog set.

Scoat Tarn sits in a corrie beneath Red Pike, Scoat Fell and Haycock on the western edge of the Lake District National Park, but has a clear view over Seatallan to the south west. From the drumlins at the head of the tarn, where we pitch the tent, the end of the lake appears to float on a platform above the valley below and the base of Seatallan. It is a surreal effect when the tarn waters are flat like a mirror.

Reflections at dusk, Scoat TarnThe horizon shots were made from the fells surrounding Scoat Tarn - Haycock and Scoat Fell - from where the view opens up to the west and the Isle of Man over the Irish Sea. These represent the beginnings of a project called "New Horizons", which is ongoing.
